With plenty of players who are on the club's radar featuring at the tournament, this promises to be an exciting few weeks ahead.But while most of Liverpool's attention might have been on the game between Belgium and the Netherlands, where the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Micky van de Ven were in action, perhaps the focus instead should have been on another game happening simultaneously.The biggest highlight from the opening day of the tournament was undoubtedly the hosts Georgia beating Portugal quite comfortably in Tbilisi by a score-line of 2-0.With Portugal lining up with the likes of Pedro Neto and Nuno Tavares, putting together a strong side, this was quite a shock result. Especially since Georgia missed quite a few first choice players who were away with the senior national team in Glasgow the night before, only featuring as second half substitutes in this game after rushing back to play in Tbilisi.On the whole, Georgia played disciplined football with quick counter attacks that caught out Portugal several times and highlighted the technique and quality of Georgia's young stars.It's the kind of result that is yet more proof of the growth of Georgian football.Georgian football has always had a proud history. For much of the 20th century, though, Georgian players were tied to the Soviet Union. That is until the dissolution of the USSR and the establishment of Georgia's independence.In the last thirty years or so, development has been quite slow, but it seems to be picking up pace over the last decade.Dinamo Tbilisi, the country's biggest football club, has established a strong academy run by Andrés Carrasco, who worked at La Masia between 1999 and 2011 with the likes of Lionel Messi.The fruits of his work has already seen the likes of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — the Napoli superstar who has himself been likened to Messi (Goal) — and Giorgi Mamardashvili emerge as two exciting prospects in Europe's top five leagues. Others will follow.Luka Parkadze recently moved to Bayern Munich, and Dinamo's 17-year-old Gabriel Sigua is one of the youngest players to feature at the U21 tournament so far, already with extensive experience at senior level for the club.In total 13 members of Georgia's U21 squad, over half, came through the ranks at Dinamo Tbilisi.This is noteworthy on its own.And clubs like Liverpool should keep a close eye on the developments in Georgia. Especially in light of the FA's new changes when it comes to work permits.Previously, Georgian players not playing in top European leagues would have been out of reach for English clubs due to the point-based system introduced across the board since Brexit.However, the new rules, which come into effect this summer, have made an amendment to work-permit requirements, giving an exception to four players for every Premier League club, who can now qualify for a work permit without meeting the 15 point criteria.This opens up a new opportunity for FSG and Liverpool, providing more markets to explore. The club would be smart to begin in Georgia. As the U21 European Championship has just proved it, the country is bursting with talent — many of which is being overseen by the man who helped bring through Messi at La Masia.
